AOPA Foundation’s Air Safety Institute Releases Latest Online Course: Unmanned Aircraft and the National Airspace System
Frederick, MD – The AOPA Foundation’s Air Safety Institute (ASI) has released a new interactive online course entitled “Unmanned Aircraft and the National Airspace System.”
The course covers topics including: what unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are and how they operate; their impact on general aviation; how manned and unmanned aircraft can safely share the airspace; and how UAS are operating in today’s national airspace system (NAS).
The course was developed in collaboration with the Department of Defense (DoD). While DoD UAS flights represent the majority of unmanned operations in today’s airspace, it is anticipated that the Federal Aviation Administration will release a proposed rule that will establish policies, procedures and standards for the use of civilian UAS in the NAS.
“We want this course to separate fact from fiction. ASI is pleased that DoD recognizes AOPA and ASI as experts in general aviation information and education, and is happy to have partnered with them on this course,” said Paul Deres, ASI’s director of education.

The AOPA Foundation’s Air Safety Institute is dedicated exclusively to providing continuing pilot education and safety programs for general aviation. It is funded by donations from individual pilots and organizations, which support the cause of improved general aviation safety.
