AOPA Foundation's Air Safety Institute Unveils Public Benefit Flying Online Course

Palm Springs, CA – The AOPA Foundation’s Air Safety Institute (ASI) has released Public Benefit Flying: Balancing Safety and Compassion, an online course designed to assist volunteer pilots and those interested in becoming volunteers.

The course was produced with the generous support of Welles Murphey, Jr., the Air Care Alliance, and the AOPA Foundation.

“As an organization dedicated to community service through public benefit flying, the Air Care Alliance was pleased to partner with ASI on this new online course,” said Lindy Kirkland, president of the alliance. “We hope that after viewing this course, more pilots will want to get involved in volunteer flying efforts.”

The course’s flight profiles and interactive decision-making scenarios quickly help viewers understand how volunteer flying demands professionalism and responsibility that goes far beyond that of a leisurely personal flight. Viewers will learn how to mitigate pressures, recognize treacherous mindsets that could cause harm and become adept at managing the unique risks of volunteer flying. “ASI and the Air Care Alliance were natural partners for this effort,” said Bruce Landsberg, president of the AOPA Foundation. “The course fits in with ASI’s ongoing mission to educate pilots and the alliance’s mission to encourage the use of general aviation for the public benefit.”  The course can be found at www.airsafetyinstitute.org/volunteerpilots

The AOPA Foundation’s Air Safety Institute is dedicated exclusively to providing continuing pilot education and safety programs for general aviation. It is funded by donations from individual pilots and organizations, which support the cause of improved general aviation safety.
