“Wright Flyer III Replica”
You can’t go wrong with the Wright Flyer III replica, built by Mark Dusenberry of Dover, Ohio. That is exactly what John Lane thought when he took this captivating photo at daybreak on October 5, 2005, during the 100-year celebration of the Wright brothers’ first practical flight at Huffman Prairie, Dayton, Ohio. Lane started the Lebanon Warren County Airport in the early 1950s and received the Charles Taylor Master Mechanic and Wright Brothers Master Pilot awards.

“Boys and Planes”
“Our boys love aviation and flying in small airplanes,” said Brian Hash. “My wife Denise took this picture of Nolan (6) and CJ (4) at a park-n-ride at the south end of Auburn Municipal Airport (S50) in Washington.” Nolan started flying in planes at five weeks old, and CJ says he will be a pilot when he gets bigger.
June Photo of the Month
“The Ultimate Airport”
The early morning sun glistened off the water at Watson’s Air Service in Wawa, Canada, while Terry Bardwell and members of his fishing party anticipated a spectacular sunrise flight on their way to a fun-filled fishing week at Lake Kabinakagami in Northern Ontario. Congratulations Terry for capturing the moment and Gary Palinkas for entering the photo.
May Photo of the Month
“De Havilland Beaver at Sunset”
Colin and Ghyrn Loveness inspired a winning photograph flying near Seattle, Washington, when they captured their de Havilland Beaver at sunset. While Ghyrn flew the subject airplane, Colin took the winning shot from a Cessna 172. The brothers have been flying since they were kids—both soloed in a J-3 Cub at age 16. Seems aviation is a family affair: Dad used to fly, and mom and sister are both pilots.

“Slick Takeoff”
“The J-3 Cub was taking off at my small base airport in Cypress, Texas, but the background wasn’t what I wanted,” says this month’s winner Curtis Chapline. Thus he changed things to his satisfaction using computer software. Chapline is not new to the contest. He also won last month’s vote, and his “Tower Man” landed him second place in the altered category of last year’s finals, published in AOPA Pilot's December 2007 issue.
March Photo of the Month
“Cub and Bird Soar”
Congratulations to AOPA member Curtis Chapline, who was inspired by a Piper Cub and a bird to produce a winning composition. Chapline had just snapped the Cub at his home base airport in Cypress, Texas, when he spotted the eagle. Adjusting the two images produced the clever look he wanted.
February Photo of the Month
“Floatplane and Idyllic Location”
There’s something about floatplanes and Alaska that grabs the attention of many pilots. Just look at the quaint scene of a de Havilland Beaver perched on an alpine lake in Misty Fiords National Monument near Ketchikan, Alaska, which earned AOPA member James Jakubek this month’s top spot.
January Photo of the Month
“Champ in the Snow”
This Aeronca Champ on skis is calling it a day after frolicking in the snow at Millers Field in Newburgh, Maine. John Miller, owner of the private-use 2,400-foot grass strip, picked a perfect opportunity to snap the Champ as Allan Tubbs taxied it toward the hangar for the evening.
