Oklahoma aeronautics director receives Hartranft Award

AOPA on Nov. 13 awarded its highest honor for government officials to Victor Bird, director of the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission. The Joseph B. "Doc" Hartranft Jr. Award is presented annually to an elected or appointed government official, whether federal, state, local, or foreign, who has made significant contributions to the advancement of general aviation. This year's presentation was made during a special awards program on the AOPA Live stage at AOPA Aviation Summit in Long Beach, Calif.

CA pilot recognized for efforts to protect Oceano Airport

A self-described "Mooney Girl" is this year's recipient of AOPA's Joseph Crotti Award for service to general aviation in California. Jolie Lucas, co-founder of the Mooney Ambassadors, was honored for her work to protect Oceano Airport in San Luis Obispo County.

AOPA on Nov. 13 awarded its highest honor for individuals to Marjy Leggett, a volunteer for AOPA's Airport Support Network, for her efforts to promote and protect her home airport, Vista Field in Kennewick, Wash. The Joseph P. Sharples Perpetual Award is presented annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to the advancement of general aviation. This year's presentation was made during a special awards program on the AOPA Live stage at AOPA Aviation Summit in Long Beach, Calif.

Kings discuss getting 'busted by the database'

King Schools owners John and Martha King spoke on AOPA Live Nov. 13 about the day they were detained at gunpoint by Santa Barbara police because federal officials thought the Kings' Cessna 172 was stolen. It wasn't, but it did carry the same N number as a Cessna 150 stolen in 2002 from McKinney, Texas.
