May 6, 2004 — When the Ohio legislature increased the state's aircraft registration tax by nearly 800% for small aircraft two years ago, AOPA vowed it would fight to correct the inequity. Since the tax hike was implemented, AOPA State Affairs Manager Keith Holt and AOPA Regional Representative Bill Leavens have lobbied legislators, arguing that it was unfair to charge pilots of small private planes the same $100 registration fee for a four-seat piston aircraft that a commercial jetliner pays. Alerted to a patently unfair situation, Ohio lawmakers have introduced a bill in the Senate, SB 230, and one is expected in the House to reduce the registration fee to $15 per seat. If enacted, the legislation would save the typical Cessna 172 owner $40 a year.
