AOPA works to prevent redundant GA security action

AOPA Midwest Regional Representative Bob Dickens is working to stop an unnecessary bill (House File 153) in the Iowa legislature that would require a review of aviation security to determine if more stringent measures are needed to prevent aircraft from being used for terrorist attacks.

The bill would require that the state's Aeronautics Division assess private aviation services, pilot training (including learning to fly crop dusters), and pilot background checks.

AOPA contends the legislation is unnecessary because the Iowa Department of Transportation and the Transportation Security Administration already are partnering to provide and encourage the development of general aviation security plans, including AOPA's Airport Watch Program.
