More GPS benefits to pilots with CVG terminal routes

Good news for pilots flying through Ohio and Kentucky. They'll have an easier time negotiating the Cincinnati (CVG) Class B airspace starting in December. That's because three new GPS-based Area Navigation IFR Terminal Transition Routes (RITTRs) will become available. The FAA approved the final rule creating the routes on Wednesday.

RITTRs are starting to appear in terminal airspace around the country because of a five-year AOPA effort to have the FAA create new routes based on GPS waypoints to give general aviation pilots better access to airports and airspace.

The RNAV routes can be used by any pilot with an IFR-certified GPS receiver and are strategically placed to give controllers the tools they need to transition pilots through, rather than around, Class B airspace. The routes are similar to Victor airways. On NACO (government-issued) charts, terminal airways are printed in blue.
