AOPA seeks input on FAA plan to shut down four Alaska NDBs

The FAA is proposing to decommission four NDBs in Alaska along with the associated routes and approaches in favor of shifting resources to support satellite and other area navigation (RNAV) capabilities. While AOPA is a champion of GPS and the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), the organization is concerned that the decommissioning of traditional ground-based navaids could have a negative effect on general aviation if the transition isn't managed carefully. The NDBs in question are Wessels (ESS) on Middleton Island; Wiley (IEY) at Barrow; Nabesna (AES) near Northway; and Wood River (BTS) near Dillingham. AOPA is asking Alaska members by February 10 to provide specific information on how frequently you use the NDBs and whether you plan to transition to GPS and WAAS.
