San Diego County explores purchase of Oceanside
The county of San Diego could hold the answer general aviation pilots based at Oceanside Municipal Airport have wanted to hear for years. The county announced Tuesday that it would evaluate the feasibility, costs, and benefits of purchasing and operating the Oceanside airport. It already operates eight airports efficiently and profitably. The city of Oceanside has struggled to operate the airport and has tried numerous times to close it. AOPA has successfully fought each of those attempts, and more recently, the association opposed the city's proposal to study "alternative land uses" for the airport property. "AOPA is working to ensure Oceanside stays open and believes all options should be studied including finding a new public sponsor," said AOPA Vice President of Airports Bill Dunn. "We look forward to working with the county and city on this process."
