Fuel Mismanagement

Assuring that the engines have enough fuel of the right type to continue running is one of the most basic responsibilities of the pilot in command, but every year dozens get it wrong. Complete fuel exhaustion, where no usable fuel remains on board, isn’t the only problem. Other errors include fuel starvation (usable fuel is prevented from reaching the engine by incorrectly set selectors), misfueling with an inappropriate type or grade of fuel, contamination by water or particulate matter, and mistakes in the use of carburetor heat, boost pumps, or other system components.
