The acclaimed New Mexico Pilots Association Mountain Flying Clinic will be held again in Santa Fe, September 13 - 15, 2018. As an added benefit this year the Clinic will overlap the AOPA Regional Fly-In at KSAF, September 14 - 15, allowing pilots the opportunity to attend both events. The Clinic, held at the New Mexico Army National Guard facility on the Santa Fe airport, starts with an all day ground school on Thursday covering the tools necessary to understand and plan for the unique and rewarding challenges of mountain flying. The 2018 curriculum includes mountain flight planning, aircraft performance, mountain weather, aeromedical factors, risk management & survival, mountain communications, and mountain flight maneuvers. Scheduled instructors include regionally and nationally recognized CFIs, including Michael Szczepanski, Craig Stapleton, Chuck Grosvenor, Dr. Tom Navar, J.D. Huss, and Cliff Chetwin.
The following days offer optional flight opportunities with a highly experienced mountain flying
CFI over spectacular mountainous terrain, through mountain passes, and landings at several high-altitude airports. Successful completion of both the ground school and the optional flight will meet the flight review requirements of 14CFR61.56. Credits under the FAA WINGs Pilot Proficiency Program are available and some insurance companies will provide discounts for participating in this safety clinic.
We’re planning some fantastic excursions in and around Santa Fe. Whether you’re seeking a Native American or Spanish history experience, a scenic road trip, the Margarita Trail, outdoor recreation, or an artist studios tour, we’ll have something for every interest.
Tour the Jet Warbird Training Center on Friday and Saturday from noon until 3:00 p.m. Training is offered in ex-military jets, including a T-33, MiG-15, L-29, L-39, and Fouga Jet. The tour will be at their hangar on the north side of the airport; the aircraft will be on display, and there will be a brief discussion on training requirements and handling characteristics of each type. The transition to each of these jets, as well as the history, will also be discussed. Interested in WWII aircraft? Just a short, scenic, one-hour drive south to Moriarty Municipal Airport is the Lobo Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. in this facility are two aircraft: a 1944 Fairchild PT-26 Cornell in flying condition, and a 1941 Beechcraft AT-11 Kansan that is currently under restoration. The facility is located at the east end of the airport and is available for free tours from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. September 14 and 15.

The nation’s oldest capital city, Santa Fe is known for sunny days and American Indian and Spanish culture. Visit a real Indian Pueblo, a Spanish mission, or one of many historic Native American or Spanish sites.
Get outdoors for a round of golf, a hike, or a river rafting trip. Take a guided tour on a Harley Davidson or 4 x 4 of restaurants, art studios, historical sites or plan your own tour. Visit the wineries, breweries or distilleries. Relax and unwind at one of Santa Fe’s legendary, restorative spas. And of course, shopping at the markets is a must.
There are plenty of options for families with kids in Santa Fe. Meow Wolf arts collective and the Harrell Bug Museum are must-sees. There’s also the Santa Fe Climbing Center, Children’s Museum, Museum of International Folk Art, living history at El Rancho de las Golondrinas, just to name a few.

Flying to an AOPA Fly-In is the most enjoyable way to attend, but you don’t have to bring an airplane to participate. We will provide special flight procedures for pilots, and great directions and parking accommodations for drivers.

Safety is a priority for any pilot, and flying into the AOPA Fly-In is no exception. Detailed special arrival and departure procedures will be developed and released approximately six weeks prior to the show, along with an FAA NOTAM to help guide you safely and efficiently in to the event.
Due to on-field TSA security limitations, camping with your aircraft will not be available at Santa Fe. There will also be no RV/tent camping available.
