Home to AOPA’s headquarters, Frederick, Maryland offers a perfect blend of historical and modern entertainment for the entire family. Visit Frederick’s revitalized downtown to experience a plethora of shopping and restaurants. For those who love the outside, tour one of our many local wineries and parks to hike, bike and fish. Frederick is also a suburb of both Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Plan to bring your family and tour the Nation’s Capital or see the trendy Inner Harbor and National Aquarium in Baltimore. Just a few miles south of Frederick, the must-see National Air & Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center is located at Dulles International Airport.

If exploring history is for you, discover Frederick County’s rich Civil War history by following the soldiers’ footsteps along two of Maryland’s Civil War driving tours, visit the site of the Battle of South Mountain (1862) and the Battle of Monocacy (1864). Tour the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in the heart of downtown Frederick. Nearby Antietam, Harpers Ferry, and historic Gettysburg are three destinations on any history buff’s list of places to experience.

Not to be confused with our free seminars, these in-depth learning experiences will be at a professional “ground school” level of education. Offered in two, three-hour sessions on both Friday and Saturday, these workshops will provide an opportunity to roll up your sleeves and deepen your skills in subject areas, provided by world-class presenters. You’ll leave each workshop with a logbook endorsement attesting that you've completed three hours of ground training applicable toward the Air Safety Institute’s Focused Flight Review.

The Air Safety Institute’s Focused Flight Review qualifies you for WINGS credit! The Focused Flight Review program was developed with and is recognized by top aviation industry partners with an intent to sharpen your skills, proficiency and knowledge using carefully designed flight scenarios.

STOL Invitational

AOPA is excited to bring you a Short Field Take-off and Landing (STOL) Invitational! While you relax at the Flightline Cookout, Presented by Jeppesen, let some incredibly talented pilots demonstrate backcountry flying techniques.

Interest in STOL and Backcountry flying is spreading across the nation and growing with annual competitions in Alaska and Texas. Experienced pilots use multiple aircraft to demonstrate short take-offs and landings on a turf surface located near the airport infield, in close view of the spectators. The aircraft categories range from single-engine bush airplane to turbine powered, heavy touring aircraft.

All AOPA Fly-Ins will include seminars discussing STOL techniques and Backcountry Flying Safety.

D-Day Squadron

AOPA and the D-Day Squadron are teaming up to commemorate two anniversary milestones in 2019: The seventy-fifth anniversary of D-Day and AOPA’s official eightieth anniversary, which occurs mere days after the Frederick Fly-In.

The D-Day Squadron’s C-47s and DC-3s will make a special appearance at the Frederick Municipal Airport before they prepare to fly to Normandy, France, for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. The D-Day Squadron will lead a flight of restored Douglas C-47 Skytrains and Douglas DC-3s across the North Atlantic in tribute to the veterans that took part in the invasion of Europe.

Come to the Frederick Fly-In and participate in this momentous milestone in AOPA history and commemorate these incredible aircraft of the Greatest Generation!

AOPA Fly-Ins have cool things for kids, too. Our Kids Zone has all kinds of entertainment, from interactive games to a fun play area including activities, learning, games, and more!



AOPA plans the fly-ins, but volunteers bring them to life. Whether it’s setting up the Main Stage area, guiding cars and aircraft into their parking spaces, or taking down displays and exhibits at the end of the event, there are many ways volunteers help make the magic happen. But volunteering isn’t all about hard work – it’s also about meeting other volunteers, seeing the fly-in from the “insider’s” perspective, and making friends and valuable contacts that you will keep for years. You’ll be proud to have participated, knowing that you did your part to support GA. If you want something better than a front-row seat, join our community of AOPA Fly-In volunteers! Harper's Ferry, WV 11/9/2012 - Not long before sunrise, the eastbound Q-751 "Rock Runner" peaks between the last of the brilliant fall colors along the Shenandoah Subdivision's wooden trestle through downtown Harper's Ferry. The historic town has been preserved by the U.S. Park Service, its downtown buildings modeling life in the Civil War era in which Harpers Ferry made history.


Frederick County has a rich Civil War history that can excite any history buff! Visit a number of historic sites from the Monocacy Battlefield to nearby Antietam. If history isn’t for you, visit Frederick’s revitalized downtown to experience a plethora of shopping and restaurants. For those who love the outside, tour one of our many local wineries and parks to hike, bike and fish.

Frederick is also a suburb of both Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Plan to bring your family and tour the Nation’s Capital and stop by the National Air & Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center. Or head east to see the trendy Inner Harbor and National Aquarium in Baltimore.

Joint Base Andrews Air Show

Special events abound the weekend of May 10-12 including the Joint Base Andrews Air Show. The air show kicks off Friday, May 10 with a full program open to the Department of Defense cardholders and special invitees only. On Saturday and Sunday, May 11 and 12, JBA will open its gates to the public. You won’t want to miss featured appearances by the Air Force Thunderbirds and the Navy Blue Angels!

Fly or Drive

Flying to an AOPA Fly-In is the most enjoyable way to attend, but you don’t have to bring an airplane to participate. We will provide special flight procedures for pilots, and great directions and parking accommodations for drivers.


Special Flight Procedures

Safety is a priority for any pilot, and flying into the AOPA Fly-In is no exception. Detailed special arrival and departure procedures will be developed and released approximately six weeks prior to the show, along with an FAA NOTAM to help guide you safely to the event.

One of the favorite aspects of an AOPA Fly-In is the chance to camp with your aircraft, and join other outdoors enthusiasts and pilots. New this year, our Friday night Flightline Cookout, Presented by Jeppesen, will be centered near the aircraft camping area, complete with an exciting AOPA STOL Invitational aerial demonstration. This “don’t miss” event will be a highlight of your fly-in weekend! Camping fees apply. Camping is “primitive,” with limited shower facilities.
