Missouri pilot wins Sporty's sweepstakesMissouri pilot wins Sporty's sweepstakes

AOPA member Jeff Hux received a voice mail any pilot would appreciate on Sept. 10. The call from Mike Wolf, president of Sporty’s Pilot Shop, told Hux that he is the provisional winner of the 2008 Sporty’s Sweepstakes. The prize is a new Cessna 172SP with a Garmin G1000 cockpit and Bose headsets. Hux, a farmer in Sikeston, Mo., must sign a release and provide a copy of his pilot certificate before he will be awarded the airplane.

Sporty’s employees, members of the media, and representatives of the companies involved were on hand for the drawing of an order number at Sporty’s headquarters located on the Clermont County Airport in Batavia, Ohio, just east of Cincinnati. Tumblers spit out balls with numbers on them that were matched to Hux’s order number from earlier in the year for an en route low-altitude instrument chart. Anyone who placed an order at Sporty’s over the last year was eligible to win the prize.

Hux, who started flying in 1991 and flies about 150 hours per year, owns a Beechcraft Bonanza A36. He was busy harvesting crops and couldn’t return Wolf’s call until the following afternoon. “He was very excited. He said his Bonanza’s up for sale,” Wolfe said. He expects Hux to come to Batavia and pick up his new airplane as soon as his harvest duties are wrapped up.

Sporty’s 2009 Sweeps prize will be another new 172SP, but with the Garmin synthetic vision technology added to the G1000’s capabilities. The drawing is scheduled for May 16, 2009, at Sporty’s annual fly-in.
