Fun Family Isolation Activities to Do During Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day is known as the kickoff of summer fun. Campgrounds, amusement parks, pools, and beaches all typically mark the long weekend as their season’s opening. Due to the coronavirus, many of our plans will be drastically different this year.

If you are stuck at home during this holiday weekend, we have some fun activities that can be done with your family at home and help keep you busy (and sane) during this weekend, and throughout this period.

Create A Home Cinema

Building your cinema is much easier than it sounds. Set up the movie chairs by arranging pillows or sleeping bags in a row on the floor. Delegate one of the kids to make and sell the movie tickets, while others can make and sell popcorn. The easy part will be gathering everyone’s favorite movies and then turning off the light to make the experience complete!

Create and Send Coronavirus Greeting Cards

Get the whole family involved and take the time to show love and affection by creating lovely notes and artwork. In these trying times, we all need someone to assure our loved ones that everything is going to be okay. And that someone could be you. If you want to expand on this project, you can also send cards to local hospitals and nursing homes. The effort will be extremely appreciated.

Start an Indoor Garden

Ever thought of indoor gardening? Never time like the present, and get the whole family involved. Also, gardening has an anti-stress effect, and you can enjoy watching your beautiful plants grow every time you come home tired or frustrated. Here are some step-by-step instructions to get you started.

Prep for a Post-Pandemic Bash

Making plans for a real, tangible event on the horizon can help keep morale up. Have the kids come up with the guest list and menu. Think of a clever name you can call it and discuss the games and entertainment as well.

Give your Neighbors an Art Show

One way to uplift your neighborhood is to provide a family art show each day. Tape each day’s creations to your front door. People walking outside will be sure to smile. And, to take it a step further, paint rocks. Decorate rocks with paint and uplifting images, words, or sayings, then place them randomly around the neighborhood. Neighbors are welcome to add more and keep their favorites.

Schedule Zoom Playdates

With social distancing, making connections with friends and family can be tough. Luckily, we live in a time of technology, so you can still check in on your friends and hang out virtually. Chances are your kids are especially missing their friends, so set up a virtual playdate with toys, games, and fun trivia questions.

Complete a Personalized Puzzle

Order a puzzle made out of a favorite family photo that will double as a frameable piece of art for your home. Puzzles are a fun, wholesome activity for families to pass the time, and a customized one makes a sweet keepsake gift

Have a Paper Airplane Contest

National Paper Airplane Day is May 26. AOPA has created these downloadable templates for you. Have the family compete against each other and come up with some cool prizes. Perhaps one winner can get out of dishwasher duty for a week, or another winner will get to eat dessert first one night. You can be super creative with the prizes.

These are just a few ideas, but hopefully, you can take advantage of your time together. As crazy as life is right now being in isolation, there are some moments with your kids, spouse/significant other that you won’t ever forget. Remember, even amid all this awfulness, you are making memories!
