| FAA adding staff to reduce aircraft registration processing time |
| The aircraft registration processing time continues to frustrate owners, narrowing the time window to act without risking a lapse. The FAA has assured AOPA that steps are being taken to increase staff. As of May 19, the FAA was processing registration applications received in the mail "on approximately December 30," the agency reported. The processing time has hovered between four and four-and-a-half months for some time, and the longer processing time is the product of several factors.

| FAA standardizing hot spot symbology |
| The FAA announced it is standardizing hot spot symbology as well as verbiage on airport diagrams within chart supplements and the Terminal Procedures Publications starting May 19. The FAA said it will standardize symbols to three shapes with two distinct meanings: a circle or ellipse for ground movement hot spots and cylinder for wrong surface hot spots.

| Passenger with no flying experience lands Cessna 208 |
| A Florida man successfully landed a Cessna 208 May 10 after the pilot in command became incapacitated while flying from the Bahamas to Florida. Air traffic controllers coached the man to a successful landing at Palm Beach International Airport. While pilot incapacity is thankfully rare, there are ways to prepare nonpilot passengers to take action in the event the pilot is unable to fly.

| Florida's Aerospace Center for Excellence names new director |
| Eric Crump has been named executive director of the Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE) in Lakeland, Florida. ACE is operated by the Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo team. In 2012 Crump opened the Polk State College Aerospace program and has served as its director since its inception.
