Delta opens Propel Flight Academy with Skyborne Academy

Flight school helps in Hawaii airlift efforts
AOPA petitioned the FAA on behalf of pilots (AOPA members and otherwise) who established an impromptu emergency airlift beginning August 11. They were among the first outsiders to reach the isolated coastal community at the epicenter of one of the worst disasters in state history. One of the organizers of the airlift is flight school owner Laurence Balter, who said the pilots delivered thousands of pounds of food, water, medicine, and pet food over the course of the first few days of the effort. Airlines raise pay, hire at unprecedented pace
Regional airline pilots can expect a starting pay of $108,000 per year—a 546-percent jump over the starting pay of $16,000 offered in 2000. Some regionals are offering signing and continuation bonuses as well as training contracts. Over at the majors, pilot pay has grown by about 10 percent per year since 2010, and company retirement contributions are increasing from 16 percent to 18 percent by 2027. READ MORE ›
WAI opens 2024 scholarship window

More than 100 scholarships valued at more than $1 million are available for flight training and more. The deadline to apply is October 12. Charting changes highlight mountain passes
To improve situational awareness and increase safety, the FAA recently adopted a new policy allowing the use of VFR waypoints and checkpoints to help pilots find mountain passes. The first passes to reflect these charting elements are found in the Brooks Range in northern Alaska—but, this convention may also be applied in other parts of the country. READ MORE ›
