Comment deadline extended for Part 61 proposed rule
The FAA extended the original January 11 deadline until February 10 for public comment on a rulemaking proposal that would incorporate more than 30 testing and certification standards for pilots, instructors, mechanics, and others into a single Part 61 regulation.

FAA approves software fix for Garmin GFC 500 autopilot
The FAA has approved a software fix that will correct an issue with Garmin GFC 500 autopilots with optional auto trim that could trigger potential trim runaway. Garmin said January 12 the software fix will be issued in the next few weeks. The glitch did not affect GFC 500 autopilots installed in Cirrus SR20 and SR22 aircraft.

Charting changes cause concern
Pilots are concerned that the FAA intends to retain and chart only private airports with landmark value beyond February 23. There will be no sudden concerted effort to remove private airports from the charts wholesale, the FAA said, and pilots likely will not see many significant changes in the short term.

Boom Supersonic taps FlightSafety International as training partner
Boom Supersonic has chosen FlightSafety International to be its partner for flight training and education of its planned supersonic aircraft called Overture. FlightSafety will develop a training program and curriculum for Overture pilots, mechanics, and cabin crew, tailored for supersonic flight and operations, according to a press release. FlightSafety will provide full flight simulators to support those commercial airline customers that conduct their own internal training. Boom said Overture is on track to achieve type certification in 2029. Production is planned to commence in 2024 in Greensboro, North Carolina, with rollout in 2026 and first flight in 2027.
