FAA offers medical reconciliation process to some veterans
The FAA is offering a path to reconciliation for military veterans who may not have reported receiving Department of Veterans Affairs disability benefits on their pilot medical certificate application. This comes in response to a letter from AOPA calling on the agency to follow the same amnesty-first approach adopted for similarly systemic problems in the past. READ MORE ›

FAA updates nontowered flight operations advisory circular
The FAA is cautioning pilots to avoid straight-in approaches to nontowered airports altogether when there are other aircraft in the pattern, according to an advisory circular published June 10. The preceding version encouraged pilots to use the standard traffic pattern approach but recognized that pilots might execute a straight-in approach on certain occasions. READ MORE ›
Short practice runways sharpen skills
Pilots in Fairbanks, Alaska, recently went to the 2,900-foot gravel runway at Fairbanks International Airport to mark a 25-foot-wide by 800-foot-long practice runway on either end of the longer runway. This will provide pilots with a place to practice their short-field takeoff and landing skills before heading out to more remote off-field landing areas such as gravel bars, hilltops, beaches, lakes, rivers, glaciers, and other surfaces. Florida flight school owner helps to design 'learn to fly' license plate
Pilots in Florida, including a flight school owner, have launched a license plate designed to promote general aviation and raise funds for young people to pursue careers in the aviation industry. The license plate is now available for preorder. READ MORE ›
CubCrafters testing slats with fans to boost lift
CubCrafters is testing a new technology that is expected to dramatically increase lift. The system uses multiple electric ducted fans attached to leading edge lifting slats. The Electric Lift Augmenting Slat technology can be added to an existing airframe or built into the wings as original equipment and can be designed to retract when not in use. READ MORE ›
Diamond turboprop takes first flight
Diamond Aircraft’s new aerobatic trainer took its first flight at the Diamond headquarters in Austria on June 12. The Dart-750 is an all-composite aircraft powered by a 750-horsepower Pratt & Whitney Canada PTGA-25C turboprop engine. Diamond will offer a training package with each sale that covers all phases of basic training, a proprietary simulator, and computer-based training. READ MORE ›

Accident case study: Trapped in ice
On the morning of April 19, 2018, a Cirrus SR22 carrying two occupants departed from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, bound for a conference in Indiana. What lay between the travelers and their destination, however, was a large swath of hazardous icing conditions, IMC, and mountain obscuration. Join the AOPA Air Safety Institute in examining this accident re-creation, which includes a look at a similar tragedy involving a Beechcraft Bonanza that occurred just three days prior to the Cirrus accident.
