Airline and aviation industry hiring numbers remained strong and steady in the first few months of 2023 as airline pilot attrition woes grow. Record breaking hiring numbers at the close of 2022 did plateau a bit for the first three months of 2023. The 12 major airlines hired an average of 1,100 pilots per month as they race to fill vacancies left by retiring pilots. Consulting firm Future and Active Pilot Advisors says pilot retirement numbers will continue to build each year until they peak in 2026.

FAA easing mental health barriers for pilots |
Federal air surgeon Dr. Susan Northrup said the FAA intends to ease aeromedical rules for mental health concerns. Aviation International News reports that Northrup, speaking to the Business Aviation Safety Summit on May 9, said upcoming revisions to the federal aviation regulations will make it easier to regain their medical certificates and decrease wait times for pilots grounded by mental health issues. Northrup has been focused on addressing mental health issues within the FAA since her 2021 appointment as the most senior medical certification officer.

Alaska weather broadcast ending |
The National Weather Service is looking for feedback on two planned changes to how aviation weather products are delivered in Alaska. The weather service plans to discontinue the evening edition of the aviation area forecast for Alaska, and also cease the television broadcast of the nightly Alaska Weather program. Pilots are encouraged to comment on these proposed changes before May 30.
