AOPA's McSpadden lived his passion |
Richard McSpadden, head of the AOPA Air Safety Institute, died October 1 in an aircraft accident outside Lake Placid, New York. He was 63. McSpadden came to AOPA in 2017 with an extensive flying background, including as former commander and flight leader of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. "AOPA has lost a great colleague in Richard McSpadden, and I have lost a great friend," said AOPA President Mark Baker. "Richard represented everything you ever wanted in a leader, teammate, and mentor."

FAA extends MOSAIC comment deadline |
The FAA has extended the deadline to comment on proposed rule changes to modernize aircraft certification to January 22, 2024. FAA staff said the delay in gathering comments should not affect the planned implementation of the rule changes by the end of 2024.

Speak up for better convective forecasts |
Pilots willing to spend about five minutes sharing their perspective on convective weather forecast tools in a survey will help the FAA and the National Weather Service determine which products pilots use, and optimize those offerings. Participants will be asked to rank a list of different types of information from most to least important, and express which data they consider most relevant for assessing convective weather.

N.J. flight instructor, student assist in ocean rescue |
A flight instructor with Mercer County Community College's aviation program and a student pilot on a progress check interrupted their flight to assist rescue efforts for people on an overturned sailboat near Cape May, New Jersey. The instructor and student spotted the overturned sailboat with sailors standing on one of its pontoons. The instructor and student circled the boat, contacted Atlantic City approach control, and remained in the area until a state police helicopter arrived on the scene, according to The Trentonian.
