House Bill 3691 is presently before the House State Affairs Committee. This bill would allow the state of Texas to acquire the Austin-Mueller Municipal Airport for general aviation use. AOPA strongly supports House Bill 3691.
General aviation has been the predominant presence at Austin-Mueller Municipal Airport. With over 280 based aircraft and over 62,000 operations at Mueller, general aviation’s presence at Austin depends on the availability of adequate general aviation facilities. The move to the new $690 million Bergstrom International Airport was done to accommodate air carrier operations and not general aviation. General aviation access to Bergstrom will be limited and very expensive. T-hangars that were available at Mueller for around $200 a month will now be $600 a month at Bergstrom. In addition, Austin Executive Airport is closing! General aviation access to the Austin area will effectively be eliminated. This monumental planning mistake by the city of Austin and the Federal Aviation Administration can be fixed by the passage of House Bill 3691.
