Learning Experiences

System SNAFUs

A primary emphasis in pilot training is dealing with emergency situations. Throughout our training, we practice emergency procedures and checklists designed to cope with some of the most likely and most serious problems. We learn to deal with myriad scenarios including engine failures, electrical system shutdowns, instrument failures, fires, and landing gear malfunctions. All too often in the real world, emergencies fail to follow the same patterns we've grown accustomed to in training. When that happens, we can easily become confused and take improper action. If a pilot doesn't know the aircraft systems well, it's difficult to know whether the situation is normal, or if he's all fouled up.
