New ASF seminar on towered operations debuts

The AOPA Air Safety Foundation and FAA air traffic controllers are teaming up for a new, free safety seminar being offered this summer across the nation. The seminar, which focuses on operations at towered airports, offers students, instructors, and other pilots a fast-paced presentation on safe and efficient operations at local airports. Pilots will also get ?face-to-face? time with an air traffic controller from their local towered airport for a frank discussion on pilot-controller roles and responsibilities. ?It?s your chance to ask the questions you didn?t want to ask over the radio,? said Dick Hiner, ASF vice president for training.

The new program is part of an Air Safety Foundation initiative, coordinated with FAA?s Runway Safety Program Office, to reduce runway incursions at towered airports. ASF previously produced both a video and a Safety Advisor pamphlet on operations at towered airports, but neither medium could offer live pilot-controller interaction on local operating practices. The new ?Operations at Towered Airports? seminar is free and open to all pilots. It will be presented over the summer in more than 30 locations in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Other sites will be scheduled for the fall and winter. The complete schedule is available on the AOPA Web site (www.aopa.org/ asf/schedules/sssite.html).
