AOPA helps Florida member educate Puerto Rican schoolchildren

When southern Florida member Rosa Santos, AOPA 1733216, was asked last year to present an Aviation Career Day for students at the Santiago Gonzalez School in Ponce, Puerto Rico, she immediately turned to AOPA President Phil Boyer for help. Through AOPA's Aviation Education Department, Boyer provided quantities of AOPA's Careers in Aviation, Getting Started in Aviation, and the Student's Guide to Aviation. In addition, AOPA Lead Technical Specialist Rob Hackman rushed 110 copies of AOPA's Learn to Fly package for use in her December presentation to the students.

"The brochures, information, and orientation were very helpful and informative, particularly the scholarship information," Santos told Boyer at the January 31 AOPA Pilot Town Meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. At the meeting, she presented him with a package from the city of Ponce, along with an official letter from that city's mayor thanking AOPA for its help.

Since Santos' presentation, the Santiago Gonzalez School has started a flying club.
