AOPA is backing a bill in the Texas legislature that would require the state to establish a general aviation airport in central Texas. (Austin, the state capital, is located in central Texas.) A hearing in the Texas House Committee on Transportation is scheduled for Tuesday, April 3. AOPA is urging all Texas pilots to contact committee members to express support for H.B.2522 (see the Texas Pilot Action Alert).
Central Texas has been without adequate general aviation facilities since the city of Austin closed Austin-Mueller Airport. The problem was compounded by the sale and closure of Austin Executive airport. That displaced more than 700 based aircraft. City officials have not provided enough GA facilities at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
