Know your notams

Notams have always been important to the GA pilot but since September 11, 2001, these notices have not only increased in urgency, but also in frequency. Do you know how to read a notam? How would you respond to an interception by a U.S. military or law enforcement aircraft? These are important questions in today's environment. AOPA Online ( www.aopa.org/whatsnew/ newsitems/2001/010915tfr.html) provides up-to-the-minute access to the latest FAA-issued notams for affected states. The notams are presented in technical jargon, but the AOPA Web site goes one step further and interprets the notams in plain language. Also online is a comprehensive chart explaining the meaning of intercepting aircraft signals and what your response should be. For example, if the military or law enforcement aircraft rocks its wings and initiates a slow level turn, the pilot's telling you that you have been intercepted. Your response should be to rock your wings and follow. The chart and Web site give many more details, and in these difficult times, you need all the information you can get!

Flight training funds available

We are all faced with myriad reasons why we can't start those much-desired flight lessons or resume training after a break. While AOPA can't help you find more hours in the day, the organization can help you with the really painful part of training — the strain on your wallet. The AOPA Flight Training Funds program is now available from AOPA's certified partner, MBNA America Bank, N.A. With loans of up to $25,000 available, you can be much closer to earning your wings. The new program offers AOPA members personal loans for flight training expenses with rates as low as 8.99 percent APR and repayment terms as long as five years. No down payment is required and no annual fees are assessed. Loans may be used for any aviation expense including aircraft rental, instruction fees, books, supplies, or any other goods and services needed to make flight training successful. The AOPA Flight Training Funds program gives you the flexibility to obtain your training in the environment that's most effective for you. Select a Part 61 or Part 141 school or independent CFI and use the account to pay for a certificate or rating program. The funds may also be used to simply get the additional hours you need to feel safe and comfortable in the aircraft. We want to see you in the air!

For more information on the AOPA Flight Training Funds program or to open an account, call MBNA Bank (800/882-8648) or visit MBNA online ( www.aopa.org/info/certified/funds.html).

Great gift idea!

Is there a new or fledgling pilot on your holiday gift list? An AOPA Gift Membership is an excellent way to acknowledge a new pilot. An AOPA Gift Membership gives a new pilot 12 issues of AOPA Pilot magazine, free access to AOPA's Airport Directory, automatic AOPA Aviation AD&D Insurance, access to the toll-free Pilot Information Center (800/USA-AOPA), and membership to AOPA Online (www.aopa.org). In addition, your pilot will be automatically entered in the AOPA Centennial of Flight Sweepstakes — the association is giving away a totally restored 1940 Waco three-place biplane to mark the 100 th anniversary of aviation. Your gift membership also helps AOPA continue its fight to keep general aviation strong. The cost is $39 for a one-year membership. A gift card will be sent to the recipient.
