AOPA and local pilots are working together to help save Houston (Texas) Gulf Airport.
Faced with closure of the airport on April 1, 2002, local pilots, led by AOPA Airport Support Network volunteer Chris DuPont, have mounted a campaign to convince League City, Texas, to acquire the airport from its private owner. The airport, which is privately owned and open for public use, has been on the sale block since the late 1980s when the private owner died. Recently, a real estate developer made an offer that was accepted. The airport is home to 78 aircraft and the Bay Area Aero Club.
Local pilots have been actively lobbying the city to acquire the airport and continue operating the field as an airport should this deal fall through. The city has expressed some interest. At the same time, state Senator Mike Jackson has expressed his interest in seeing the airport remain open and has pledged his support. Bill Dunn, AOPA vice president of regional affairs, and Jerry Hooper, AOPA Southwest regional representative, met this week with ASN volunteer Chris DuPont to discuss strategies to preserve the airport. Dunn and Hooper also met with Senator Jackson's staff in Austin on Tuesday to offer assistance.
