Computer Assisted Testing Service (CATS) is the official testing company of AOPA. CATS offers FAA examinations at more than 400 locations worldwide. As a member of AOPA, you receive a $10 discount on all FAA written exams at any CATS testing center. The discount coupon is available on AOPA Online ( www.aopa.org/info/certified/cats.html). Most CATS centers are located where you train — at FBOs and flight schools. Registration may be made by phone (800/947-4228) seven days a week. Walk-in service is available and you'll receive test results immediately.
In February 2004 — just six months from now — some very lucky winner will take possession of a totally restored 1940 Waco three-seat biplane. AOPA decided to commemorate the 100th anniversary of powered flight by offering a historic aircraft in its promotional sweepstakes; since 1994 AOPA has given away eight very different aircraft to lucky AOPA members who renew or join the association. Unlike past sweepstakes, the Waco UPF-7 biplane has undergone a two-year restoration. Production of the UPF-7 began in 1937, with most going into service in the Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP). Nearly 600 Waco trainers were built. The AOPA Waco was constructed in 1940 and is being restored by Rare Aircraft, of Owatonna, Minnesota. With a 275-horsepower Jacobs engine and modern avionics, the AOPA Waco is valued at $250,000. When new, a Waco sold for $9,500. New and renewing AOPA members are automatically entered to win the airplane as well as a chance to win a flight in a Waco at Red Rock Biplane Tours, of Sedona, Arizona.
The exclusive "Members-Only" section of the AOPA Web site features one of the most valuable tools to general aviation pilots, AOPA's Airport Directory online ( www.aopa.org/members/airports/). Here you'll find:
AOPA's Airport Directory online is updated each business day. There is an option to print kneeboard-size pages of the most critical airport data. Another option allows you to search airports with posted fuel prices. In addition to finding details on international destinations such as Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, you'll find more detailed information on FBOs than in the print edition of the directory.
Quick searches help you find airport locations based on fuel type available, runway length, restaurants on field, available aircraft rental, type of flight training provided, FBO 5% Rebate Program participants, and the type of instrument approaches available. You can also perform a radius search to find the distances to another airport location.
