AOPA member services that keep you flying

Last chance for a Waco

Treat someone extra special this holiday season — and get a little something too. Give a friend, fellow pilot, or aviation enthusiast an AOPA membership as a gift and both you and your friend will be entered in AOPA's Centennial of Flight Sweepstakes. AOPA will be drawing the name of some lucky pilot in January 2004 to win the amazing AOPA Waco biplane. Extensive restoration and state-of-the-art avionics make the Waco a show plane. And even if you or your friend don't win the Waco, a gift of membership in AOPA gives 12 issues of AOPA Pilot magazine, support for general aviation at the local, state, and national levels, access to the "members only" section of the AOPA Web site (www.aopa.org) and to the AOPA toll-free Pilot Information Center (800/USA-AOPA), and more.

Three ways to give a gift of membership:

  • Complete and return the insert card on page 19
  • Visit AOPA Online ( www.aopa.org)
  • Call 800/USA-AOPA (800/872-2672)

AOPA Legal Services Plan

Money well spent

The AOPA Legal Services Plan — one of the top services that AOPA offers exclusively to its members — celebrated its twentieth anniversary recently. The plan does much more than offer legal help in the event of an FAA enforcement action. Under the plan, members can receive reviews for aircraft rental, leaseback, hangar, and tiedown agreements and obtain legal advice on aircraft purchases or sales. The $26 annual enrollment cost for private pilots is money well spent, and with legal fees what they are today, a review alone will pay back the cost of the plan.

For more information on the AOPA Legal Services Plan, visit the Web site ( www.aopa.org/info/certified/lsp.html).

Approach charts available

Planning a flight to an airport you've never been to before or think that things may have changed at an airport you have been to before? Free and unlimited access to approach charts for the more than 5,300 public-use airports is available to members on AOPA Online ( www.aopa.org/members/airports/). Simply fill in the three-letter identifier for the airport in Quick Search. The airport information will appear with hyperlinks in the top-right corner of your screen. Click on U.S. Terminal Procedures. A Web page will appear with each procedure's title hyperlinked. Click on the procedure you wish to view. Plates appear in Adobe Acrobat, which is free to download. All the plates are current and legal to use for Part 91 operations; these are official government charts, used by NACO. For ease of viewing, you can zoom in or out and also print in a large 8.5-by-11 size. There is no limit; you may view and print as many as you like. All procedures appear, including standard terminal arrival routes (STARs), departure procedures (DPs), and airport diagrams. The legend and rate of climb and rate of descent tables also appear.
