AOPA member services that keep you flying

AOPA ONLINE

Taking a trip?

If cold weather is making you dream of sunny skies and warm beaches — or if you'd simply like a change of scenery, AOPA Online can help. The Web site ( www.aopa.org/members/pic/intl/) is a great resource for pilots considering a flight out of the country. In addition to up-to-the-minute notams for flights in international airspace, AOPA Online provides a wealth of information on flying into the Bahamas and Caribbean, Bermuda, Canada, Central America, Cuba, Mexico, South America, and Alaska. Information is also provided on currency conversion, transatlantic flights, and dealing with U.S. Customs. You'll also find information on the International Council of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Associations (IAOPA) and FCC applications for international travel.

This month AOPA Pilot discusses international travel in two articles (see " Answers for Pilots: Heading South?" on page 26 and " El Salvador: The Show and the Volcano," on page 80).

AOPA's Airport Directory 2003/2004 to be released

The forty-first edition of AOPA's Airport Directory will be published in mid-February. A $39.95 value, the directory is free to AOPA members who choose to receive it. Completely updated since the last edition, the 700-page directory includes detailed listings for more than 5,200 public-use airports and 2,000 private-use landing sites. In addition, the directory includes listings for 5,300 FBOs. Your purchases at many of those locations are eligible for the AOPA 5% FBO Rebate. The printed directory is just one way to access this useful resource. Go to AOPA Online for airport data that is constantly updated and sortable ( www.aopa.org/members/airports/). AOPA's Airport Directory online includes access to always-current instrument approach procedures. For your use offline, download the application for AOPA's Airport eDirectory for sorting and printing the data from your computer. For use in the cockpit, the eDirectory can send updated data to your Palm-based personal digital assistant — putting those 700 pages of information in the palm of your hand. Make sure you take advantage of the valuable airport directory data in all its forms.

A new home equity financing option

Pilots who own their own homes can benefit from a new financing option from AOPA and MBNA credit services. The AOPA home equity loan program provides homeowners with the tools to finance aviation purchases not covered by traditional aircraft financing programs. You can:

  • Finance aircraft purchases (such as homebuilts or experimentals not financed under the AOPA Aircraft Financing Program).
  • Purchase a hangar.
  • Upgrade your aircraft.
  • Finance the tuition of your child's aeronautical education.
  • Consolidate your debt.
  • Complete home improvements.
  • Lower your tax bill (the interest you pay on a home equity loan may be tax deductible).

Experienced loan specialists will work with you one on one to structure a flexible loan program.

For information on the AOPA/MBNA home equity loan program, visit the Web site ( www.aopa.org/info/he1/) or call 800-655-7620.
