Rep. James Oberstar (D-Minn.) praises AOPA's Airport Watch during a Washington, D.C. press conference.

Rep. James Oberstar (D-Minn.), the ranking member of the House Transportation committee, introduced a resolution in Congress yesterday recognizing AOPA's Airport Watch program and commending AOPA for its "proactive commitment to the security of general aviation, and for "partnering with the Transportation Security Administration and FAA to create immediate, innovative, and common sense solutions to [security] challenges."

"This is a ground-breaking example of AOPA's leadership on behalf of all civil aviation in the United States," Rep. Oberstar told national media during a Washington, D.C., press conference. "All through our history of aviation, general aviation pilots have had a proud and patriotic tradition of keeping America safe and secure. As we fight this new war on terrorism, we need those eyes in the sky again. We have to keep the proud tradition of general aviation alive, strong, and contributing."

Rep. Oberstar commended AOPA for enlisting the assistance of the country's 550,000 GA pilots in monitoring the more than 5,400 public-use airports for suspicious activity. "Imagine enlisting every pilot in the United States and giving every one of them a significant role in monitoring community airports. That's what AOPA's Airport Watch does," said Oberstar.
