Ed Grisham tops off N204WT. Thanks to him and MBNA, more will follow, and the price will be right.
What could be better than finally bringing home our/your Win-A-Twin Comanche? How about $5,000 worth of credit to feed that bundle of joy? That's right, now the grand-prize winner also will receive five grand for fuel.
"In the past, our grand prize winners won the airplane, but they still had to cover the cost of fuel," said Marsha Mason-Thies, director of AOPA's Membership Marketing department. "We're pleased to be able to offer $5,000 worth of credit for fuel so the lucky member can fly the Win-A-Twin free for a while."
Ed Grisham, who owns Carolina Air Center of Hilton Head in South Carolina, teamed up with MBNA, which issues the AOPA FBO Rebate Credit Card, to provide the lucky winner with some extra help to keep the 1965 Piper Twin Comanche's six tanks filled - they hold a total of 120 gallons, which, with today's fuel prices, adds up to about $400 for a top-off. Grisham donated $3,000, and MBNA $2,000. The winner will receive a $5,000 Visa gift card.
The fully restored, better-than-new Twin Comanche has an economical fuel burn. AOPA Pilot Editor-at-Large and project coordinator Tom Horne writes in a project update report that the twin's "fuel burns can be as low as 7 gph.
"This is the kind of fuel economy that gives a topped-off Twin Comanche its five-hour-with-reserves endurances. So $5,000 worth of fuel will keep the winner flying for a long, long time."
The Win-A-Twin's engines are remanufactured to meet Superior Air Parts' Millennium specifications, and it is fitted with LoPresti Speed Merchants speed modifications and J. L. Osborne wingtip tanks that each holds 15 gallons of fuel.
You can read about the Win-A-Twin's makeover through project status reports on AOPA Online and in AOPA Pilot. Its next stop will be the International Comanche Society convention in Kansas City, Missouri, which runs from September 14 through 19.
A random drawing to determine the sweepstakes winner is set for February 2005. Meanwhile, nearly 200 members win prizes each month in the sweepstakes drawings. Monthly prizes include AOPA T-shirts, eyeglass lanyards from Croakie, and AOPA Zulu watches and leather flight jackets from Sporty's Pilot Shop.
