Washington is a city of leaks, and word leaking out of FAA headquarters is that the final Sport Pilot and Light Sport Aircraft rule may be released early next week. What hasn't seeped out is when you can actually start flying with a driver's license in lieu of a medical certificate. But at some point in the near future, previously certificated pilots may be able to fly low-powered, lightweight aircraft like a J-3 Cub using a valid driver's license as a medical. AOPA has long pushed for the "driver's license medical" standard. For more details, see AOPA's Sport Pilot and Light Sport Aircraft page.
