FAA mandates software upgrade for some Apollo GPS units

The FAA has issued an airworthiness directive, effective August 3, mandating a software upgrade for certain Apollo GX-series GPS units from UPS Aviation Technologies (now a division of Garmin). Some models running software versions 3.0 through 3.4 can give pilots momentarily inaccurate readings on their course deviation indicators. That could cause a slaved autopilot to begin an inappropriate turn. Owners must upgrade their units by March. Garmin is providing the software upgrade free. (See AOPA's news release for more information.)
