May 19, 2004 - There is now hope that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill may not close its Horace Williams Airport (IGX) as originally scheduled on January 1 of next year. Two years ago, AOPA President Phil Boyer asked state legislators to intercede when UNC Chancellor James Moeser proposed closing the airport, which has no federal grant obligations, to develop a new campus. The General Assembly proposed a special committee to study the future of Horace Williams. Since then, a new dean of the School of Medicine has said he considers having a nearby airport for the school's fleet of aircraft that take doctors to rural parts of the state is crucial. AOPA Regional Representative Chris Hudson has been working with the legislature's special committee, which is meeting during the current short session to discuss various proposals for the airport's future.
