AOPA enhances Group Term Life Insurance program, benefits older pilots

The AOPA Group Term Life Insurance program, offered by Minnesota Life, recently extended its termination age to 80 years and increased the maximum coverage amount to $1 million. This supports AOPA's ongoing efforts to insure aging pilots who need life insurance.

The previous termination age was 70, but the limit is now increased 10 years to reflect the general longevity of the population. This new benefit will be applied automatically to members who have group insurance certificates issued through the program. In addition, Minnesota Life increased the group insurance coverage amount from $500,000 to $1 million. Current insureds may apply to increase coverage to amounts more than $500,000.

The AOPA Group Term Life Insurance Program is designed for active pilots with current medical certificates. The program covers most types of flying, with no aviation surcharge. For more information about the AOPA Group Term Life Insurance Program visit the Web site ( www.aopa.org/termlife/) or call 888/879-2672.

Summer flying tips

Summer's here with its hot, hazy days. Remember that heat and humidity increase density altitude and affect aircraft performance even at sea level. Before you take off on a summer flight, read AOPA's subject report on density altitude and pick up some summer flying tips to keep you safe while you're enjoying the long, balmy days. AOPA's subject reports include a collection of articles on specific subjects that have been published in AOPA Pilot and AOPA Flight Training magazines in the past 10 years. Density altitude topics include "Answers for Pilots: High, Hot, and Humid," "Hazards of Hot and High: Density Altitude and High Terrain Don't Mix," and "Dealing With Density: Performance Takes a Pounding with Summer's Heat."
