If you're planning to celebrate the New Year with a flight near Pasadena, California, make sure you check temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) so you don't start off the year on a sour note. That's because a TFR will be in effect periodically from January 2 through 4 for the Tournament of Roses parade and football game.
There will be a 5-nautical-mile-radius TFR centered on the LAX VOR's 035-degree radial at 20 nautical miles. It will be in effect from 6 a.m. local until noon local on January 2. The TFR will extend to 3,000 feet agl for the majority of the time, but it will be raised to 5,000 feet agl from 7:31 until 8:15 a.m. local. The TFR will be active again on January 3 from 4 to 5 p.m. local, and on January 4 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. local, extending up to 5,000 feet agl.
Remember the blanket stadium notam that prohibits flight below 3,000 feet agl within a 3-nm radius of a stadium seating 30,000 or more people for NFL or NCAA division one football games. It will be in effect for all bowl games, including the Rose Bowl football game on January 4. This TFR will be in effect from one hour before the scheduled start time until one hour after the end of the game.
