AOPA is concerned about a residential development to the north of Florida's Merritt Island Airport that could pit residents against the airport as the development grows. A proposal before the Brevard County Planning and Zoning Department would rezone property located within 2,200 feet of the runway from industrial to residential.
In a letter to the Titusville-Cocoa Airport Authority, AOPA said that putting homes so close to the airport would violate Florida law. If the city does pursue action, AOPA suggested that it include aviation easements with all residential deeds, require sound insulation for homes, and provide disclosure notices with all home sales, alerting residents to airport activity.
