AOPA's Medical Certification department has compiled an extensive database of more than 200 over-the-counter medications and their FAA approval status ( www.aopa.org/members/databases/ medical/search_faa_meds.cfm). While these medications are generally allowed by the FAA, individual variables could render a medication inappropriate for flight, according to Gary Crump, AOPA's director of medical certification. The AOPA database of FAA-accepted medications is not a complete list, but is an evolving one. "There are medications that the FAA will probably approve but won't be in our database," cautions Crump. If you have questions about the appropriateness of a drug, call the AOPA Medical Certification department on the AOPA Pilot Information Center line (800/872-2672).

As any pilot who's tried to buy life insurance or add to an existing life insurance policy knows, it can get very expensive for those who fly. AOPA understands the obstacles pilots face when it comes to obtaining life insurance. That's why AOPA and AOPA Member Products partner Minnesota Life have spent more than 50 years developing ways to keep those costs down.
All AOPA members — owners, students, professionals, and new pilots — can find life insurance to fit their aviation experience. For example, if you are a low-time pilot, our Group insurance program insures you with no aviation surcharge and no aviation questions asked during the application process. Experienced instrument-rated pilots may qualify for our Best Class Individual Term life rate with as few as 250 total hours and annual flying between 25 and 250 hours.
Let us help you determine the best coverage for your unique situation. Get a free life insurance quote by phone (888/TRY-AOPA, 879-2672) or online ( www.aopa.org/termlife/).
AOPA has chosen — and purchased — a Rockwell Commander 112A to be the 2005 AOPA sweepstakes aircraft. And what a prize it will be. The airplane — a model beloved by its owners but relatively unknown to many general aviation pilots — will become a flying test-bed for advanced cockpit technology. When finished, the new front office will feature an all-glass instrument panel equipped with the latest in autopilot and communication equipment, including a Chelton FlightLogic EFIS (electronic flight information system) with its primary flight display (PFD) and multifunction display (MFD). While you're enjoying the stunning cockpit, you'll be pulled through the air by one of the most reliable engines ever built, a 200-horsepower Lycoming IO-360, turning a new three-blade propeller with the latest blade and hub technology. This economical combination delivers a respectable 130-knot cruise speed on about 9.5 gallons per hour. Built by the legendary Rockwell Commander Company, the 112-model airplanes were the first design to be certified by the FAA under a then-new set of design rules — FAR Part 23 — that marked the beginning of the modern era of airplane designs. (See " AOPA Sweepstakes: The Commander Countdown Has Begun," page 89.)
