AOPA urges Alaska officials to preserve 'safety valve'

AOPA is urging state officials in Alaska to keep open Whittier Airport until an alternative airport is fully operational. AOPA fully supports the City of Whittier's resolution to develop a new airport with more potential for growth and development, but is concerned about losing a weather "safety valve" for aircraft transiting Portage Pass. AOPA submitted comments to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities about a proposal to close the airport.
