AOPA recognizes members who have been with the association and provided continuous support for general aviation for 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 years with distinctive lapel pins. These service pins are mailed each month as AOPA identifies members who have reached these membership milestones. The 10-year pin is silver plated with an antique finish and pearlized white-color fill; the 20-, 30-, and 40-year pins are 18-karat gold plated with an antique finish and translucent jewel-tone-color fill; and the 50-year pin is gold plated with an antique finish, translucent jewel-tone color fill, and two Swarovski crystals. AOPA anticipates it will deliver nearly 13,000 10-year pins, almost 6,000 20-year pins, 3,500 30-year pins, more than 2,000 40-year pins, and 577 50-year pins this year.
Having identified a growing gap in available insurance policies, the AOPA Insurance Agency has stepped in with new coverage available to flying clubs — even those with high-performance, complex aircraft.
"Some insurers are even refusing to renew existing flying-club policies," said Karen Gebhart, AOPA's senior vice president of products and services. "Our members turned to AOPA for help, and the AOPA Insurance Agency responded. By working closely with major insurance companies, we can offer policies designed to meet your club's unique needs."
"At AOPA, we believe that your club's insurance should be tailored to fit the needs of your club's membership, not the other way around," added Greg Sterling, executive vice president of the AOPA Insurance Agency. "So we'll work with you to cover your entire fleet, including high-performance or complex aircraft, and to enable your pilots to transition safely to higher-performance aircraft."
The AOPA Insurance Agency will also provide general liability coverage for flying clubs' use of airport facilities.
Another benefit for flying clubs is the AOPA member discount. "If all of your flying-club members also belong to AOPA, you'll earn an additional 5-percent premium credit," said Sterling.
July's featured AOPA Air Safety Foundation online courses can help pilots brush up on IFR rules and procedures, learn the best techniques for single-pilot IFR, and take advantage of little-known air traffic control emergency services. ASF's interactive online courses run between 20 and 45 minutes, and all qualify for FAA Wings safety program credit. July's featured courses are:
"IFR Adventure: Rules to Live By" follows intrepid aviator Ace and his instructor on a realistic IFR cross-country, challenging course participants to remember IFR rules as situations arise requiring their application.
"Single-Pilot IFR" provides practical tricks for pilots challenging the gray world of IFR without the help of a copilot.
"Say Intentions..." explains how you can easily add ATC flight assists to your bag of aviating tools. Hands-on training in the program teaches when pilots should ask for a flight assist, and how to work with controllers to get out of harm's way.
All ASF online courses are free and available to all pilots online ( www.aopa.org/safetycenter/). A suitable-for-framing graduation certificate is available upon successful completion of each course.
