New Jersey governor signs record-keeping bill

Last week New Jersey Acting Gov. Richard Codey signed into law Assembly Bill 3058, which requires aircraft providers to verify a renter's pilot certificate and government-issued photo identification, and to retain copies of that information for five years. The bill also grants authority to the commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation to adopt regulations to put the new law into effect. AOPA had made repeated attempts to persuade lawmakers that the bill was duplicative and unnecessary because of current FAA rules and rigorous industry practices regarding aircraft rental. The new law becomes effective July 15.
