AOPA works to preserve Arizona's small airstrips

AOPA Western Regional Representative Stacy Howard, recently appointed to the governor's Aviation Advisory Council, continues to work with local pilots, legislators, and state transportation officials to preserve Arizona's small airstrips. To save Pleasant Valley, Howard attended a recent meeting of pilots and government representatives where officials pledged to work with the state land department toward continued airport use of the property. Howard has been lobbying state legislators to restrict the state land department's effort to limit aviation activity at more than 50 remote airstrips. Separately, lawmakers are considering an unrelated constitutional amendment that would permit the state to offer 25- to 50-year land leases to either public or private airport operators. But these changes would not help save Arizona airstrips before 2008 at the soonest.
