Legislator agrees to AOPA amendment in GA security bill
Florida Rep. Sandra Adams has agreed to amend House Bill 977 to alleviate AOPA's concerns about shifting security oversight for general aviation airports to a different branch of state government. As introduced, H.B. 977 would have given the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) new responsibilities and powers to review and approve security plans for GA airports that have at least one runway greater than 4,999 feet and do not host scheduled passenger-carrying commercial service operations. AOPA Florida Regional Representative Nelson Rhodes has been working with Adam's office, the Florida House Domestic Security Committee, and local aviation groups to amend the bill to entrust such authority to the Florida Department of Transportation, which has a better understanding of aviation issues.
