Renters: Make sure you're covered
Aircraft renters may be putting themselves at risk every time they fly if they don't have their own non-owned-aircraft insurance policy. Most FBO policies afford little or no coverage to the renter, and you could be held liable for property damage, injuries, and damage to the rented aircraft, which could cost you thousands. Even a small mishap can put you in financial jeopardy, but with a non-owned policy, you can have the coverage you need to fly with confidence. And your non-owned policy also covers the cost of your legal defense in the event of an accident or claim, a benefit that alone can save you thousands of dollars. Oh Canada!
An easy international flight
Flying between Canada and the United States is probably the easiest international flight that a general aviation pilot can make. The procedures, language, and love of general aviation are shared by both countries and will make your trip a smooth one. AOPA's flight-planning guide for Canada is published in collaboration with the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) and includes several chapters of information covering everything from preflight planning to Canadian flight rules, Canpass (an aircraft program that makes clearing customs easier for private-aircraft owners and their passengers traveling to Canada from the United States), and directions for completing Canadian and international flight plan forms. Also included is a convenient, one-page checklist of procedures. The AOPA/COPA Guide to Cross-Border Operations is available online.
