Reports are starting to come in following Hurricane Wilma's tear across Southern Florida. While most airports in the area are open and operating now, a few were hit hard.
As of Tuesday, six airports were closed including Boca Raton (BCT), Ft. Lauderdale Executive (FXE), Key West (EYW), Marathon (MTH), Marco Island (MKY), and North Perry/Hollywood (HWO). Miami International (MIA) was open to emergency relief flights only. With many of its jetways damaged by the storm, MIA was not expected to restart commercial operations until sometime Wednesday.
Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International was open to helicopter operations only. Some of the most extensive damage was reported at Boca Raton, with up to 90 percent of the hangars destroyed.
