Roof collapse closes Millville AFSS, services rerouted
The Millville Automated Flight Service Station (AFSS) in New Jersey has been permanently closed. As AOPA first reported September 1, the roof collapsed on the leased facility housing the AFSS. The FAA has told AOPA that the building isn't worth repairing. Most of Millville's services have been transferred to other AFSSs. Toll-free calls to 800/WX-BRIEF and direct calls to the facility have been permanently rerouted to the Leesburg, Virginia, and Islip, New York, facilities. The Leesburg, Islip, and Williamsport, Pennsylvania, facilities are handling calls from Millville's in-flight frequencies where reception limitations allow. ( See a map with alternative frequencies.) The FAA plans to erect a portable tower adjacent to the current Millville location, hopefully within four weeks, which will restore more in-flight frequencies to be handled by Millville AFSS staff. The FAA and Lockheed Martin (which takes over AFSS operation October 4) also are working on plans to restore the frequencies.
