Ratings and endorsements
Whether it's your favorite seaplane or tailwheel, complex, or high-performance airplane that you hope to someday fly as pilot in command, the FAA requires training and testing, or an endorsement by an authorized instructor, to have an additional category, class, or operating privilege added to your credentials.
Part 61 of Title 14: Code of Federal Regulations, or 14 CFR Part 61, provides pilots regulatory details on how to obtain these additional ratings or privileges, but often the "legalese" language of the regulations can lead to more confusion.
The goal of the subject report Ratings and Endorsemments is to help simplify and put into plain language what the FAA requires before you can take the controls as pilot in command of an aircraft you've often dreamed of flying. You'll also find pertinent articles to help you as you progress in your advanced flight training.

AOPA Legal Services Plan
You can't be protected if you aren't enrolled
With the height of flying season approaching and more flight activity around the country, it's time to be aware of the possible problems that even the best-trained and prepared pilots can face. Fortunately, many AOPA members are prepared since they have enrolled in the AOPA Legal Services Plan for affordable, dependable legal protection in a variety of situations in which one might need legal support. This includes unlimited consultation on most aviation matters covered by the plan, annual review of key aviation documents, and one free half-hour consultation with an AOPA Legal Services Plan panel attorney regarding aviation-related matters not otherwise covered.
"I can't tell you how bad I feel when a member calls in and needs the assistance of the Legal Services Plan, and they are not enrolled," says Woody Cahall, vice president of AOPA Aviation Services. "I know these pilots just never think they're going to get into a bad situation, but once it happens they kick themselves for not spending the little amount it costs to enroll."
