AOPA opposes Air Force request for more North Carolina airspace
Commanders at Pope Air Force Base in North Carolina are looking to expand a military operations area (MOA). Their proposal would take the current Gamecock A MOA, push the floor from 7,000 feet msl down to 3,000 msl, and rename the now larger MOA Warthog A. (They fly A-10 "Warthogs" out of Pope AFB.)
AOPA will oppose the plan.
"This proposal would affect the use of three GA airports and a major airway, V136 between Fayetteville and Myrtle Beach," said Heidi Williams, AOPA director of air traffic services. "While the Air Force plan includes measures to make the airspace available when needed for civilian IFR operations, on the whole we think the justification for taking this airspace is weak."
Comments on the Air Force environmental assessment will be accepted through March 16 and should be sent to:
