Only aircraft that are registered outside the state of Mississippi and are used exclusively for foreign or interstate transportation would be eligible for a sales tax exemption on repairs and services if Senate Bill 2988 is approved as is. But AOPA is urging lawmakers to include all general aviation aircraft in that exemption.
The bill originally applied the exemption to all aircraft repairs and services, but a recent amendment excluded GA. AOPA argues that these lighter airplanes are greater in number than all other aircraft and would increase significantly the amount of aviation business conducted in Mississippi. In fact, many states that have applied this exemption to GA have experienced an increase in aviation-related economic activity.
